Mott Community College is Seeking Input on its Strategic Planning Process

Mott Community College’s 2026-27 strategic planning process is underway, and public input into the college’s direction is being sought through a survey and in-person events this week.

The survey can be completed online, and takes about 15 minutes. There will be four listening sessions for the community to provide input to the Board of Trustees and college leadership later this week.

Art Reyes, who has served on the board since 2016, is hoping community participation in the process provides valuable insight into the needs of the community.

“It is vital to have community participation in the strategic planning process so that we can more accurately ascertain the priorities of those we serve,” said Reyes, speaking from his perspective and not for the entire Board. “Too often, assumptions can be made by any organization which may not be an accurate reflection of what stakeholders, in our case our students, faculty and staff, the community at large and the local businesses, need when taking the simple step of reaching out to our stakeholders would give a more proper perspective.”

Most large organizations have strategic plans. In the case of a college, a strategic plan is typically a formal, future-facing document that outlines long-term goals, methods for accomplishing those goals, and how resources are allocated to fulfill the priorities outlined in the plan.

“It was decided to have a 2-year strategic plan so that we may be more fluid in our approach to serving the Mott community in a time when change comes at us very quickly,” Reyes said. “This allows us to be more prepared to better serve our students, which must be the main focus of any institution of higher learning.”

Data from the surveys and sessions will be compiled and evaluated by leadership at Mott. Reyes stressed that public input is vital to that process.

“There is no question that the best way for us to make informed decisions on the direction of the college is to get direct input whenever possible from the college community, which includes our students, faculty and staff, community members as well as organizational leaders from the various sectors of our area,” Reyes said. “This is something I rightfully take very seriously and am grateful to our community for being given the trust and responsibility to serve in this capacity.”
