Frequently Asked Questions

What is your coverage area?

Anything within the Flint city limits. We loosely define that, though. For example, in our high school sports coverage, we only cover schools that reside within the city (Flint Southwestern, Powers Catholic, International Academy of Flint, New Standard Academy, and Michigan School for the Deaf). However, as anyone who follows local sports knows, many suburban school districts have students who reside in the city of Flint. So, essentially, we are flexible. As long as there’s a Flint angle or connection in a story, we will usually cover it.

Are you biased?

I mean … aren’t we all? Our biases, to the extent we have them, at Flint. Daily. are simple: we are consistently on the side of transparency, honesty, and ethical behavior. And if you are a government or public official who operates in ways that are contrary to those values, we feel no obligation to platform you. We believe every voice in our community is important, particularly marginalized people who are often ignored in media, in political discussions, and where other critical decisions that impact our lives are made. We believe in fairness, we are willing to listen in good faith to anyone, but we absolutely do not believe we have any responsibility to engage with or platform bad faith arguments, trolling, people who are abusive, or people who wish to do harm to vulnerable neighbors in our community.

How do you handle corrections?

The nice thing about an online publication is that it is easy to fix typos. However, journalistically, we also believe there is a responsibility to let readers know when information in a story has been updated or changed. For our purposes, if the mistake is minor (think: a misspelled word, or incorrect punctuation mark), we just fix it. If the mistake is something bigger that changes context or meaning of a story when it’s corrected, we acknowledge that with an editor’s note in the story. There’s an example of what that looks like at the end of this story. If you notice a mistake in one of our stories, please email team@flintdaily.news.

How often do you publish?

In order to live up to the name of the publication, our goal is to publish something about Flint … well … daily. We don’t always hit that goal, but we do like to give people a reason to check the site regularly, so we post as often as we can. Our weekly newsletter is published and sent out to recipients who have signed up on Tuesdays.

Can I write for you?

We value new contributors and new voices for Flint. Daily. We currently are open to pitches, but we are extremely selective. Not because we don’t want you to write for us, but because our budget is miniscule at the moment (tell any rich benefactors who love community news to consider donating!). Please feel free to pitch your ideas, but we do ask for patience as we continue to grow our revenue streams. We will be honest and transparent in our communications about what our capacity is to offer payment at the time of your pitch.

We also do accept op-eds on Flint-related topics. If you’d be interested in writing one, send your idea to team@flintdaily.news.

If you launched in 2025, how come there are older stories from years ago on your site?

The site’s founders, Patrick Hayes and Jen Veloso, have written for numerous publications in Flint in their careers. Most standard freelance agreements allow writers to retain rights to their work after it is initially published by the publication. So, in order to preserve some of our past work, we have added it to the Flint. Daily. archives. In each instance, there is a line at the bottom of those stories to note where it was originally published. Here is an example.
