Jamelle Glover, director and founder of In the Beginning, and TiOra Turner, facilitator of the Next Gen Pens project at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, proudly present the Next Gen Pens September Writers of the Month:

When tasked to write a letter to their future self, these participants leaped at the opportunity. ITB encourages and recognizes the need for ELA as well as expression. They combined both their critical thinking and imaginative
sides this month, and we are grateful for their participation and ideas.
Next Gen Pens sessions are free and open to any kids who would like to participate. The next session is from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library.
To Future Kal-El

Written to me on September 12, 2026. Hello, future Kal-El. Today I am 8 years old, and I am in the 3rd grade. My favorite activities at school are math and games. On the weekends, I like to play games. Something I am really good at is gaming, and something I still like to learn is math. If I could choose three words to describe myself, they would be: kind, cool, and fun. One of my favorite memories from this year was when we went to the water park!. I’ve included a list of some of my favorite things: my favorite song is Billy Jean, my favorite TV show is actually just watching YouTube, my favorite game is Roblox, and my favorite food is pizza. I just wanted to say hello, and I hope you have accomplished many goals. Here is a piece of advice: remember I can jump from high places!

Hello Keyaren, today I am 5 years old, and I am in the 1st grade. My favorite activities at school are playing with my friends at recess and lunch. On the weekends, I like to play the Xbox. And something I am really good at is playing on the Xbox. I’ve included a list of some of my favorite things: my favorite music is funk, my favorite TV show is watching YouTube, my favorite game is Roblox, and my favorite food is pizza. I hope you have accomplished many goals!

Hello, today I am 3 years old, and I don’t go to school right now. My favorite things to do when I am at home are cleaning up and eating my favorite snacks. On the weekends, I like to go to the movies. Something I am really good at is playing video games, and something I would like to learn is writing my name. If I could choose three words to describe me, I would say I am smart, I am funny, and I am a good brother. One of my favorite things from this year is when I went to the water park. I have included a list of some of my favorite things: my favorite song is Happy Birthday, my favorite TV show is Sonic, my favorite game is Mario, and my favorite food is noodles! See you later!
