Flint. Daily. is proud to partner with In the Beginning’s ‘Next Gen Pens‘ program to showcase writing from their featured students each month. Learn more about the program by reading this story or following In the Beginning on Facebook and Instagram.
Jamelle Glover, director and founder of In the Beginning, and TiOra Turner, facilitator of the Next Gen Pens project at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, proudly present the Next Gen Pens April Writers of the Month:
- Bella Hatter
- Mohammed Al-Samet
- Jaceion Whitehead
These writers have demonstrated immense creativity, effort, and originality through their art and writing. Read their April stories below. When tasked to share their creativity with a random selection of plot, character, and setting, this month was hard to choose. These young people used imagination and creativity. In the Beginning continues to encourage and recognize the need for
ELA as well as expression, helping participants combine both their critical thinking and imaginative sides this month.
Next Gen Pens sessions are free and open to any kids who would like to participate. The next session is from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library.

Bee Attack at the Zoo
By Jaceion Whitehead (Sixth Grade)
On a wonderful day, a colorful butterfly was flying near a flower, and suddenly, bees began to attack! The butterfly was so scared that it flew long and hard and somehow ended up at the zoo near a farmer. The farmer noticed the butterfly and said, “Why is the butterfly being attacked by all those bees?” The farmer began to follow the butterfly and swarm of bees – and then he remembered he was allergic to bees, and he couldn’t talk to butterflies, so the farmer left the colorful butterfly being attacked by bees, and enjoyed the rest of the day at the zoo.
