Flint. Daily. is proud to partner with In the Beginning’s ‘Next Gen Pens‘ program to showcase writing from their featured students each month. Learn more about the program by reading this story or following In the Beginning on Facebook and Instagram.
Jamelle Glover, director and founder of In the Beginning, and TiOra Turner, facilitator of the Next Gen Pens project at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, proudly present the Next Gen Pens April Writers of the Month:
- Bella Hatter
- Mohammed Al-Samet
- Jabrelle Glover
These writers have demonstrated immense creativity, effort, and originality through their art and writing. Read their April stories below. When tasked to share their creativity with a random selection of plot, character, and setting, this month was hard to choose. These young people used imagination and creativity. In the Beginning continues to encourage and recognize the need for ELA as well as expression, helping participants combine both their critical thinking and imaginative sides this month.
Next Gen Pens sessions are free and open to any kids who would like to participate. The next session is from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library.

A BIG Easter Surprise
By Mohammed Al-Samet (Eighth Grade)
On Easter afternoon, a farmer and his kids were looking for easter eggs. Suddenly, there was a noise in the barn. When they got into the barn, all of the animals were freaking out. The farmer did his best to calm the animals, but something happened, and someone shouted to warn him to “ Look behind you!” When the farmer turned around, he saw a GIANT Easter Bunny! he jumped and yelled, and then the horse said, “I tried to tell you.”

Raining Jelly Beans
By Jabrelle Glover (Sixth Grade)
There was a group of boys who went to the zoo. They started looking at the animals for a bit, until they saw a colorful butterfly, they were super confused because they had never seen anything like it, so they grabbed it and took it home, and they decided to keep it. The next day, when they woke up, it started raining jelly beans, and that made the boys really confused, but also curious. They were trying to figure out why it was raining jelly beans, but they couldn’t put a finger on it- they all thought that maybe it had something to do with the butterfly they caught. So they let go of the butterfly, and the next day it stopped raining jelly beans.
