Cinco de Mayo Celebration & Washington School Reunion

On Friday, May 1, the vibrant sounds of Mariachi and the rhythmic footwork of Folklórico dance will fill the Flint Farmers Market as El Ballet Folklórico Estudiantil (EBFE) presents its annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration. This year’s festivities hold a special significance as the event doubles as a historic reunion for former students, staff, and families of Flint’s Washington School.

The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., offering an evening of high-energy performances, nostalgia, local vendors and community pride. “This celebration is more than just a performance; it’s a homecoming for Flint’s Bilingual Program participants” said Fabián Villarreal, co-chairperson of the event. “By combining our Cinco de Mayo festivities with the Washington School reunion, we are honoring the deep roots of the Latino community in Flint and ensuring that our shared history continues to be celebrated by the next generation.”

Attendees can expect a performance showcase by El Ballet Folklórico Estudiantil & Mariachi, featuring traditional costumes and choreography that represent the diverse regions of Mexico. Local eats and merchandise will be supplied by members of the Flint community. The Flint Farmers Market, a cornerstone of the downtown community, provides the perfect backdrop for families to gather, reminisce, and celebrate.

The Washington School reunion portion of the evening invites “Washingtonians” to reconnect. For decades, Washington School served as a cultural and educational hub for many families in the Flint area, and this event serves as a formal space to honor those lifelong connections.
