After a successful and nearly completely sold-out run of The Motown Story at their home theatre, the New McCree Theatre announced they’ll put on the show one more time — and they’re taking it on the road.
The cast will perform a special presentation of the play, written by McCree Theatre executive director Charles Winfrey, on Saturday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at the Randall Coates Auditorium located next to Beecher High School at 1020 W. Coldwater Road. Admission is $25.
In addition to giving the community one more opportunity to see the popular production, the performance is also meant to pay homage to George Moss, a Beecher educator, community advocate, and founder of the Black Arts Festival, which was an annual celebration of the talents of Beecher students held in the Coates Auditorium. Moss died at age 81 on February 27.
Moss is remembered an educator, visionary, and cultural champion whose influence continues to shape generations. His annual festive provided a platform that celebrated Black creativity and nurtured the artistic talents of countless students. That legacy was a major inspiration behind McCree Theatre bringing a show to that beloved facility as a way to celebrate his life and contributions to the community, particularly the arts scene.
“In addition to satisfying those who were turned away during our recent run, we want to engage the Beecher community and invite them into the McCree Theatre family with this performance on their home turf,” Winfrey said in a news release.
Ten of the 12 shows in February sold out at the McCree Theatre. The production features dynamic acting and vocals from a large cast, and music that will make people want to get out of their seats and dance.
“The singing is good. The costumes are good. It’s a fun time and you don’t wanna miss it,” director Patricia Enright said in an interview with Flint. Daily. about the show last month.
Tickets for the encore performance are on sale at the theatre box office located at 4601 Clio Road, at The Music Planet, 517 W. Carpenter Road, or on the McCree website. For questions, call the box office at (810) 787-2200.
