With local temperature lows predicted in the teens over the next two weeks, the Shelter of Flint announced it will open its facility as a nighttime warming facility for women and children beginning December 1 through March 31, 2026.
Shelter of Flint is located at 924 Cedar Street, near Court Street, on Flint’s westside. The warming services will be available for single women and women with children from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. each night. The facility’s capacity is 47 people.
Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties offers a 24-hour warming center, open to all people from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, including lunch at 11:30 a.m., at the Center for Hope (812 Root Street). Men and single women with children can stay at the overnight warming center, with check-in at 6 p.m. each night. People using the facility should arrive before 7 p.m. The overnight warming center is open until 8 a.m. each morning and has capacity for 98 people.
My Brother’s Keeper, an emergency shelter for men located at 101 N. Grand Traverse Street, has added 10 additional spaces for single men to access nighttime warming. Check-in is 4 p.m. each day and the warming services are available until 8 a.m. each morning.
My Brother’s Keeper has opened its facility to an additional 10 single men for nighttime warming. Their check-in is at 4:00 pm, with an 8:00 am exit.
Carriage Town Ministries, located at 705 Garland Street, is a standby facility in case capacity fills up at the other spaces. Last year, Catholic Charities reported in a news release that they served up to 140 people at a time on some evenings.
“Knowing that there is going to be increased demand this year due to a shortage of affordable housing, a challenging economy, and federal funding cuts, the community has taken an ‘all hands on deck’ approach to meeting that demand,” said Shelly Hoffman, vice president and CEO of Shelter of Flint, in a news release.
Assistance in readying these warming centers was provided by the City of Flint’s Fire Marshal, the United Way of Genesee County, and the Executive Committee of the Continuum of Care. A larger warming facility in the city is being planned in case a greater need arises.
