SUMMARY:Historical Book Club: The Most Famous Woman in Baseball
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 18\, 2026 | 10-11 a.m. at Sloan Museum of Discovery\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom 1936 to 1948\, Manley ran the Negro league Newark Eagles that her husband\, Abe\, owned for roughly a decade. Because of her business acumen\, commitment to her players\, and larger-than-life personality\, she would leave an indelible mark not only on baseball but also on American history. Attending her first owners’ meeting in 1937\, Manley delivered an unflattering assessment of the league\, prompting Pittsburgh Crawfords owner Gus Greenlee to tell Abe\, “Keep your wife at home.” Abe\, however\, was not convinced\, nor was Manley deterred. Like Greenlee\, some players thought her too aggressive and inflexible. Others adored her. Regardless of their opinions\, she dedicated herself to empowering them on and off the field. She meted out discipline\, advice\, and support in the form of raises\, loans\, job recommendations\, and Christmas packages\, and she even knocked heads with Branch Rickey\, Bill Veeck\, and Jackie Robinson. \n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Community Lecture: Race\, Redlining & Razing - Housing Discrimination and the Racial Wealth Gap
DESCRIPTION:Most of white wealth in the US can be traced to home ownership through the rise of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and the institution of the 30-year mortgage. This boon to middle class wealth was subsidized by all tax-payers regardless of race while the benefits were exclusively enjoyed by white America. \nToday\, the same urban centers that saw economic drain during the era of white flight are now being gentrified. Explore how the past lives in the present as long as we the people occupy place. Explore the implications of school systems\, public safety\, environmental justice\, and a host of other issues directly tied to where we live and how we got there in this special presentation by Delma Jackason III in recognition of Black History Month. \n\n\n\n\nRace\, Redlining & Razing:\nHousing Discrimination and the Racial Wealth Gap\nPresented by Delma Jackson III \n\nThursday\, February 12\, 2026\, 5:30-7 p.m.\nat Sloan Museum of Discovery History Gallery\n1221 E. SUMMARY:February First Friday: Ice Age Mammals
DESCRIPTION:February First Friday | Ice Age MammalsFriday\, February 6\, 2026 @ 6 p.m.\nWhat is Michigan’s state fossil? It’s not the petoskey-though it probably should be. The mastodon (Mammathus americanum) became our state fossil in 2004. During the last Ice Age Michigan was home to two species of elephants\, the mastodon and the Jefferson mammoth. In 1935 a giant beaver was discovered in Lapeer County believed to have weighed 400-600 pounds. Five more have been found. Come to this fascinating First Friday presentation to find out what other Ice Age animals roamed Michigan. There will be a surprise ending to the class. Presented by Bill Heyworth.\nLive Lectures start promptly at 6 p.m. Please arrive early for best seating.\n\n\n	Related
