SUMMARY:Thompson Lecture: Look at Art Through Stories of Colors
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Finlay\, Guest Lecturer\nVictoria Finlay was eight years old when she went to Chartres Cathedral in France\, southwest of Paris. “Look at that blue in the stained glass\,” her father said as they gasped at how the sunlight coming through the glass appeared to dance blues and reds on the limestone of the interior. “They made it eight hundred years ago and we can’t do that anymore\,” he said. And from then on\, she started to look at the colors used in all the works of art she came across\, which led her to travel around the world to find their stories. Looking at colors is a kind of decoding\, which can be like an intriguing puzzle. It can also open up surprising truths about how we perceive anything\, as well as how trade and technology and wars and fashions have affected art over the centuries. In this talk\, she will look at works ranging from Paleolithic horses to Renaissance church art to more contemporary pieces—including several in the FIA collection—to find unexpected and marvellous stories in how they are made.\nVictoria Finlay is a British journalist and author. She spent 12 years covering news and the arts in Hong Kong before returning to the United Kingdom to write books. Her first book\, Color: the Natural History of the Palette\, is a bestseller in the UK and the US\, and it was followed by Jewels: A Secret History\, Fabric: The Hidden History of the Material World\, and a vividly illustrated book titled The Brilliant History of Color in Art.\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Coffee With a Curator: We Introduced Americans to America
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Kohn\, Lecturer\nAmid the devastation of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl\, the photographers of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) set out to document the struggles of Americans across the country. At the time\, their photographs were used to encourage public support for New Deal rural rehabilitation programs. Subsequently\, the FSA produced one of the most extensive visual records of American life. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ashley Lemke\, Guest Lecturer\nJoin underwater archaeologist Dr. Ashley Lemke on a journey underwater and back in time as we explore some of the spookiest shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. Dr. Lemke will share tales of ships lost in the inland seas\, as well as the stories of the researchers and divers that explore them. Learn about legendary shipwreck hunter Kent Bellrichard and see original underwater footage that has been recently restored by Dr. Lemke and her team showing the very moment of his discovery. From the dark murky waters before invasive mussels enter the Great Lakes\, you’ll see Kent’s footage from the 1960s and 1970s in 4K.\nDr. Lemke is an archaeologist who works on land and underwater to explore the past. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, former Chair of the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology\, a member of the Society of Woman Geographers and Explorers Club Fellow. An expert on submerged sites\, she has directed research projects in North America and below its waters\, including in the Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean.
